HUDDERSFIELD REBUILDING SCHEME.
Notable Improvement in Hand.
Work has begun upon a re-building scheme which, when completed, will make a notable alteration in the architectural features of King Street, Huddersfield. It is being undertaken to provide new and improved premises for the firm of Alfred Kaye, the well-known firm of fancy drapers. The accompanying sketch by Messrs. The work in hand comprises the demolition of the existing premises occupied by Alfred Kaye, together with the building in Market Walk, formerly known as Vickers Eating House, and latterly as the Central Hotel, and the warehouse property at the back formerly occupied by Messrs. Beaumont, which was partially destroyed by the fire about two years ago. The clearing of the site of these latter buildings has been in hand for some time, as the re-building on this area will have to be completed before the demolition of the premises in King Street and Market Walk occupied by Messrs. Kaye can be proceeded with.
The new building will have frontages of 36ft. to King Street, 67ft. to Market Walk, and 52ft. to Downings Yard; it is to be three storeys high, together with basement; and the elevations to King Street and Market Walk will be in modern classic style, built of white Empire stone, with windows and panels of bronze.
The shop front of King Street will be in the form of an arcade, with two entrances from King Street and one from Market Walk. The setting back of the shop fronts from the building line in Market Walk will allow space under cover.
Internally the premises will be fitted up on the most up-to-date lines. There will be an electric passenger lift to serve four floors, and a central heating system will be installed.
Messrs. Abbey and Hanson, of Cloth Hall Street, are the architects for the buildings, and the architect for the shop front and fittings is Mr. Reginald W. Lone, of London.
