According to the author Lawrence Dunn, when R.M.S. Maloja was launched on the 19th April 1923 she and her sister ship R.M.S. Mooltan were at over 20,000 tonnes, the largest ships yet built to slip comfortably through the Suez Canal.

On 11 September 1939 Maloja was requisitioned by the Admiralty and converted to an armed merchant cruiser in Bombay, India. The conversion included having one funnel removed, to increase the arc of the anti-aircraft guns. After the conversion it joined the Northern Patrol as HMS Maloja, No. F26.
