Further Information:

Mr. Joshua Carter, who died in October 1880 at the age of 73 years, was a cobbler and a toll bar keeper at Carlinghow, but he became one of the pioneers in the development of an important branch of the local industry. He began in the extracting business - a process for destroying the cotton in union material, which is now embraced in the carbonising branch of the industry - and ultimately became associated with the late Mr. Henry Wildsmith in the founding of the firm of Wildsmith, Carter and Co, at Carlinghow.
