Build in the garden of their founder Miss Polly Smithson, later to become Mrs Polly Wharton. The Houses were built by Polly and her father Sam Smithson in memory of her mother Sarah, and brother, Christopher. It was as part of Polly's legacy that the houses' should have a stone tablet for perpetuity attached to them and be known as 'The Sarah and Christopher Smithson Memorial Homes'. The Stain glass window within St James Parish Church, Heckmondwike is inscribed and dedicated to the memory of Polly, by her husband Thomas Wharton.
